Painted Gourds

Barry started painting the “ornamental” gourds growing wild in his parents’ Prescott ranch in 1990 and started selling them in 1991. Themes include petroglyph-inspired figures, as well as western and southwest animals and plants.

Barry works in acrylic paints on dried, cured gourds grown in Arizona. Most pieces are adorned with semi-precious gemstones, shell and found natural objects — including but not limited to — abalone shell, Asian turquoise, lapis lazuli, mother of pearl, Peruvian opal, sandstone, white buffalo and wood.
